Improving Seating for Wheelchair Users

Through the development of wheelchairs and para-sport equipment, the design team at RDS Co., Ltd. realized the significant impact that individual seating can have on a person's ability to perform. Recognizing that able-bodied individuals also spend a considerable amount of time sitting, they saw the potential benefits of analyzing seating quickly and accurately to enhance people's lives.

SS01 is a unique measurement system designed and developed by RDS Co., Ltd. to improve seating, particularly for wheelchair users. This innovative system functions as a robot with 15 actuators that can adjust various parts of the seat and the torque of the wheel rotation in a matter of seconds. Equipped with multiple sensors, it precisely logs seating position, the center of gravity, speed, and torque of each wheel. With SS01, users can rapidly test different seating positions, obtain quantitative data, and gain insights into their physical comfort.

The SS01 system, measuring 2526 mm in width, 3950 mm in depth, and 1250 mm in height, incorporates advanced technology to provide accurate and reliable results. Its development began in August 2017, with the final product completed in August 2018. Since then, SS01 has been utilized for medical research, and ongoing development and improvements are underway.

The design team faced various challenges during the development process, particularly in formulating specifications for diverse applications and designing structures to meet those requirements. However, through repeated prototyping and improvements, they successfully overcame these obstacles.

SS01 originated from the development of WF01TR, a racing wheelchair for Paralympic athletes. The team recognized the crucial role of proper seating position in maximizing performance. By implementing the SS01 system, they were able to gather extensive personal data, including 3D body shape data in a seated position, wheel rotation speed and torque, and shifts in the user's center of gravity. This wealth of information allows for precise adjustments to the seat, seatback, step, and camber angle, resulting in a personalized optimum solution.

The SS01 system has garnered recognition for its ingenuity and impact. In 2020, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Robotics, Automaton, and Automation Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The SS01 system exemplifies strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
